About the Saint

Patronage: Pilgrims, travelers, Spain, and laborers
St. James the Greater, one of the twelve apostles and the brother of St. John, was among Jesus’ closest companions. After the Ascension, tradition holds that he traveled to Spain to preach the Gospel. He was later martyred in Jerusalem, and his relics were brought to Compostela—now a world-famous pilgrimage site. As the patron of pilgrims, he encourages us to walk by faith and trust God along the way.
